An upper-level undergraduate course that explores ethics in chemistry and the impact of chemical innovations on society has been developed. Goals of this course were to promote student recognition of ethical considerations in chemical innovations and chemical research and demonstrate the link between the application of chemical innovations and the formation of government policy. The course involved presentation and discussion on multiple topics along with student writing about a use of chemistry in society and expression of students' own opinions based on their literature research. The SENCER-SALG assessment was used to elicit students' opinions on their experience in this course. Student responses indicate that the course had a positive influence on their recognition of chemistry in society and their likelihood of civic engagement. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)
