Many federal agencies rely on print materials to convey important information to the public, and many of the materials are written at a 10th-grade reading level or above, further limiting those individuals with low literacy. As such, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recommends the application of existing best practices for developing and disseminating health information. It is thought that applying best practices will enhance the likelihood of people making healthy decisions to manage their health. This article describes an activity that provides students with the tools and skills to develop clear and readable materials, as well as to communicate effectively to the public using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) "Simply Put: A Guide for Creating Easy-to-Understand Materials."
