Chinese Education and Society, v43 n5 p90-107 Sep-Oct 2010
This article uses information from a 2009 survey of the employment circumstances of female college students from Beijing's higher education institutions to analyze the differences among college students in the process of job seeking. Such divisions are manifested in terms of gender, household registration, human resources, specializations, and differences in household social resource networks; they are gender, urban-rural, and class segregations that already exist in the prelabor market. Analysis by genders reveals that ascribed factors and achieved factors have different effects on the genders: male students are influenced more by urban-rural differences and specializations, whereas female students are affected mainly by family backgrounds. Communist Party membership and foreign language proficiency affect both men and women, but Party membership has a greater influence on successful job acquisition among men, whereas foreign language proficiency has a greater effect on successful job acquisition among women.
