Stepping Up in Tough Times: Trustees Offer Best Practices, Advice for Weathering Economic Hardship
Polonio, Narcisa
Community College Journal, v81 n4 p16-21 Feb-Mar 2011
As Americans look for ways to reboot their careers, the value and contributions of the nation's community and technical colleges cannot be oversold. A wave of unprecedented support--from the press, the public, even the White House--has shone a light on the benefits of an affordable, quality community college education. Despite unprecedented strides, the pressure of ballooning enrollments--mixed with the sting of impending budget cuts--threatens to undo much progress. As one's institution braces for the latest financial blow, now is as good a time as ever to consider options. What resources can one depend on to navigate financial hardships? One lifeline worth considering is the governing board, particularly trustees. To get a sense of how community college board members are stepping up in tough fiscal times, the author polled three trustees whose colleges have demonstrated the ability to weather economic hardship. This article presents their advice for weathering economic hardship. ["Stepping Up in Tough Times: Trustees Offer Best Practices, Advice for Weathering Economic Hardship" was written with David Conner.]
