Taking the Work out of Homework
Cox, Teodora B.; Singer, Stacy L.
Mathematics Teacher, v104 n7 p514-519 Mar 2011
Technology impacts students' learning experiences. The increased use of calculators, computer algebra systems, and computer-based and Web-based assessments opens up new opportunities and challenges for teaching and learning mathematics. Students' lives are becoming busier, and they have less time to dedicate to homework outside the classroom. Also, many students admit that they do not enjoy completing homework assignments. In this study, the authors consider the use of an online homework delivery system versus the traditional paper-based homework assignments with undergraduate calculus students. They hypothesize that students were more inclined to complete Web-based homework assignments than paper-based assignments. They also set out to determine whether the completion rates of the Web-based assignments can be used to predict students' calculus test grades. Last, they examine students' perceptions of the Web-based homework system. The insights gained from this study and the implications for teachers and students are discussed at the end of the article.
