The View inside the Beltway: Seattle Teacher Trades in Her Chalk for a Chance to Be a Legislative Fellow
Peterson, Kristina
Journal of Staff Development, v31 n6 p18-20, 22 Dec 2010
National education reform happens with or without teacher input, but teachers are increasingly finding ways to enter the policy dialogue. In addition to traditional union representation and direct contact with elected representatives, emerging web 2.0 tools have created a new level of interaction between teachers and policy makers. In this article, the author describes her experience as a legislative fellow with the Education and Labor Committee in the House of Representatives. In that role, she listened and responded to groups and individuals who came to the office to discuss federal education legislation. Throughout the year, she learned a variety of ways current and former teachers engage in policy proposals and deliberation.
