Early federal court decisions in school desegregation placed little emphasis on public school facilities. Those early decisions focused primarily on requiring black and white students to attend the same schools and requiring the integration of teachers. What does the literature say about the relationship between student achievement and educational facilities? Will better educational facilities produce higher student achievement? In this article, the author provides a rationale for improving school facilities. He believes that, although there is no conclusive evidence that school facilities have a direct effect on student achievement, his experience with school desegregation in Kansas City, Missouri, has cemented his perceptions that there is a connection.
