Campus Stories: Three Case Studies. Part B: The Odyssey Program at Hendrix College

This article is the second of three case studies of successful implementation of experiential education at very different types of institutions. Like many similar institutions, Hendrix College, a liberal arts college of approximately 1,400 students located in Conway, Arkansas, experienced declining enrollments and decreased revenues as a result of the recession of 2001-2003. At the opening faculty meeting of the 2003 fall semester, J. Timothy Cloyd, President of the College, called on the faculty to be bold in their response to the challenges created by the economic downturn. Two years later, "Your Hendrix Odyssey: Engaging in Active Learning," an engaged learning program, was up and running. Since that time, enrollment at the college has grown dramatically and the institution has been able to significantly raise tuition, thus increasing net revenue. The program is extraordinarily broadbased and includes six categories of engaged learning: (1) Artistic Creativity (AC); (2) Global Awareness (GA); (3) Professional and Leadership Development (PL); (4) Service to the World (SW); (5) Undergraduate Research (UR); and (6) Special Projects (SP). Combined, these categories cover most forms of experiential learning typically found on college campuses, such as internships, study abroad, volunteer work, community engagement, undergraduate research, and artistic activities. In addition, the sixth category, SP, makes room for interdisciplinary, nontraditional, unusual, or less easily classified ways of learning. Now Odyssey is firmly entrenched as a graduation requirement and a defining element of campus culture. [For Part A, see EJ912855; for Part C, see EJ912857.]
