Is the sound of pupils talking in class an indication of disengagement and a cue for teacher intervention or an indication of active learning? According to Jennifer Richmond, second in science at Falinge Park High School in Rochdale and a lead teacher with Rochdale Local Authority, "pupils talking in groups can develop language skills; it's essential preparation for high quality written work. A pupil talking is a pupil learning if the activities are structured well. It rarely just happens though and needs preparation." Jennifer has made extended use of the "Steps Tables" from the National Strategies' "Progressing to Level 6 and beyond in science" materials. Jennifer provides support for other schools in Rochdale, in conjunction with science consultant Pat Dower and advanced skills teacher Sam Brook, and shares effective practice through hands-on continuing professional development.
