Bloodhound SSC: A Vehicle for STEM
Galloway, Ian
Education in Science, n232 p21 Apr 2009
This article features the BLOODHOUND Project which aims to break the world land speed record by achieving 1,000mph. It is an iconic adventure that will push technology to its limit. BLOODHOUND SSC provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. It is an important educational project that is available to all teachers of science both primary and secondary, with the principle aim of inspiring young people. The BLOODHOUND SSC website is full of information about the car, the hunt for the right desert, interviews with engineers, pictures and video clips. Materials on the site are suitable for many areas of the curriculum: science, mathematics, design technology and geography. Teachers will find many hooks on which to hang children's learning, with starters, ideas for homework and opportunities to add to lesson plans and enhance schemes of work. The project illustrates real teamwork and demonstrates clearly what it means to be "STEM-literate".
