Using YouTube[TM] to Promote Curricular Awareness and Persuasive Skills in the Basic Communication Course
Procopio, Claire
Communication Teacher, v25 n1 p25-28 Jan 2011
In this assignment, students are asked to promote a communication course to potential majors by making a short advertisement, effectively using persuasive techniques and audience analysis. The focus on communication course offerings compels students to consult the university catalog and research the communication curriculum, opening up the possibility of recruiting communication majors and minors from the large pool of students typically in the basic communication course. Beyond the benefits of exposing more students to the many interesting areas of study in the communication field, the assignment challenges students to apply communication techniques beyond the classroom walls. Public speaking in a classroom environment is often aimed at a rather narrow audience. Giving students the opportunity to develop persuasive messages aimed at a more diverse audience and with more real-world relevance is an important goal of instruction. This assignment allows students to craft a persuasive message designed for a much larger audience of web viewers. For many students, this assignment results in their first effort to upload a video segment to YouTube[TM]. Executing the project helps them develop skills in a new communication medium, thus better equipping them to achieve future communication goals. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
