Map Your Way to Speech Success! Employing Mind Mapping as a Speech Preparation Technique
Paxman, Christina G.
Communication Teacher, v25 n1 p7-11 Jan 2011
Mind mapping has gained considerable credibility recently in corporations such as Boeing and Nabisco, as well as in the classroom in terms of preparing for examinations and preparing for speeches. A mind map is a graphic technique for organizing an individual's thoughts and other information. It harnesses the full range of cortical skills--word, image, number, logic, rhythm, color, and spatial awareness--in a single, uniquely powerful manner. To create a mind map (a.k.a., concept map or spider web), one usually begins by writing the main topic in the middle of a blank piece of paper. Sub-topics are then "mapped" around the main topic. The sheet of paper begins to look like a set of branches because all of the ideas are linked to each other. The key to creating an effective mind map is to use words, colors, and images to assist the brain in conceptualizing ideas as they relate to other ideas. In this article, the author describes an activity wherein students learn and apply mind mapping as a speech preparation technique. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
