Administrators of today's community college are sprucing up facilities with new amenities and services to attract students and cater to their needs. Administrators say competition for students is fierce and that good facilities can make a big difference when students are deciding on which school to attend. While students cite academic quality as their main consideration when deciding on a college, 67 percent of students also feel that the quality of campus facilities is an essential or very important characteristic, according to a 2006 report by the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA). For many community colleges today, the need to update an aging infrastructure is driving much of the remodeling and new building construction. While many ideas for additional college facilities aren't new, community colleges are building facilities that improve upon the original concepts, thereby making the amenities more inviting, more convenient, more useful and more conducive to learning. One popular trend today is the creation of one-stop student service centers. Another trend is to transform libraries into comprehensive learning resource centers.
