Twenty-eight biological and adoptive White mothers of non-White children were interviewed in New Zealand and in the United States. Through a thematic analysis of transcribed interviews and interview notes, 7 primary themes emerged (a) looking like a family means looking alike and looking White, (b) mothering as vulnerability, (c) teen girls' perceptions of Black and Maori men as unattractive and frightening, (d) a lot of not talking about race, (e) the eventuality of racism, (f) hostility from Black and Maori women, and (g) interracial families as representative of mothers' multiculturalism or colorblindness. Study limitations and implications for future research are discussed. (Contains 4 tables.)
