Smart Math: Removing Roadblocks to College Success
Bassett, Mary J.; Frost, Betty
Community College Journal of Research and Practice, v34 n11 p869-873 2010
Developmental mathematics (DSPM) is no longer a roadblock to student success at Jackson State Community College. Previously, all students, regardless of their goals, had to pass or test out of the same DSPM courses before enrolling in the college courses and programs they desired. In Spring 2007, Jackson State began a process of redesigning its developmental mathematics program. The redesign is called SMART (Survive, Master, Achieve, Review, and Transfer) Math, which is Jackson State's vision of how students experience DSPM in its redesigned format. Combining three developmental math courses into one course separated into 12 modules, SMART Math provides multiexit options relative to students' education and career goals. Mastery of competencies and opportunity to progress more quickly (or slowly) is achieved by on-demand individualized assistance, use of study guides, and technology driven instruction.
