NASPE recently published the newly revised Appropriate Practices documents (elementary, middle and high school), intending to clearly distinguish between teaching practices that "should" and "should not" occur in physical education classes. Good physical education teachers incorporate appropriate practices into their teaching. However, there are exemplary teaching practices that distinguish great teachers whose programs go above the norm. These exemplary practices are evident in the instructional practices of exceptional physical educators and in great physical education programs. This article enumerates practices which describe instructional skills that provide high quality physical education classes. These exemplary practices are appropriate across all three levels (elementary, middle, high) and therefore are presented in a single list and organized into the same five sections as the Appropriate Practices books: (1) Learning Environment; (2) Instructional Strategies; (3) Curriculum; (4) Assessment; and (5) Professionalism.
