Adelante Ball: A Student-Developed Activity Designed to Increase Motivation and Participation

Physical education is the type of discipline which can be taught in a variety of settings. While fitness was a principle component of daily instruction, various physical activities also served as the medium for teaching valuable life skills, such as respect, communication, trust, problem solving, and self-direction. In an effort to teach these skills, the affective domain was a focal point during much of the instructional planning. One of the biggest challenges educators face is helping students overcome a lack of self-direction and motivation. In this article, the author introduces Adelante Ball, a student-developed activity designed to increase motivation and participation. In Spanish, adelante means to move forward. The objective of Adelante Ball is for one team to move an 8-inch foam ball forward while on offense by utilizing teamwork and strategic game plans into the opponents' territory to score. By contrast, effective defensive strategies prevent the offense from moving in too closely and ultimately scoring. (Contains 1 figure.)
