Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities
Allen, Kendra L.; Hughes-Hassell, Sandra
School Library Monthly, v27 n1 p52-54 Sep-Oct 2010
In order to best serve the needs of students with disabilities, school librarians must be aware of best practice in special education. They must communicate and collaborate with general education teachers and special education professionals to provide targeted curricular, instructional supports as well as appropriate resources and technology. This article reports a research study that examined how well-prepared school librarians believe they are to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Specifically, it explored if and how school librarians in one school system in central North Carolina: (1) receive information about best practice in special education; (2) gather information about the specific needs of the students with disabilities in their school; (3) meet students' varying educational needs; and (4) provide information and services for parents/guardians of students with disabilities. Driving this study was the recognition that school librarians have a responsibility to ensure that students with disabilities are educated appropriately.
