Movement Skill Learning through Repetition, Variety and an Explicit Purpose
Mally, Kristi K.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v22 n5 p16-19 May-Jun 2009
Lots of learning takes place in gymnasiums. A teacher's job is to direct that learning and funnel it toward what the profession deems important. This requires teachers to have a sound understanding of what constitutes learning and how learning is observable beyond the movement product. This article aims to make research-based best practices understandable, applicable, and practical for the physical education teacher. It provides practical ideas and tips related to increasing the chances that students will indeed learn movement skills in the gymnasium. The author reviews movement skill acquisition and the many facets involved in movement skill learning. Then, the author discusses how repetition, variety and an explicit purpose serve as key tools for learning. Lastly, the author presents an introduction and explanation of a few ready-to-use activities that are meant to promote fundamental movement skill competency.
