Learning for Life
Nimmo, Jane
Adults Learning, v21 n10 p28-29 Jun 2010
By the end of 2010 over 15 million euros will have been allocated in the UK through the Grundtvig adult learning programme. Over 900 organisations and thousands of staff, individuals and learners involved in adult education have benefitted. Grundtvig has helped to enhance the quality of learning provision; widen perspectives; increase motivation; and has become a conduit for individuals and organisations to develop beneficial working relationships across Europe. Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig was a Danish clergyman and the founder of the Nordic tradition of "learning for life." He believed that learning should encompass civic responsibility and cultural development, as well as academic learning. This ethos is at the heart of the Grundtvig programme, which focuses on informal and non-formal learning for adults across Europe. Grundtvig promotes and supports social inclusion and intercultural understanding, helping to inspire a love of learning. In 10 years of supporting adult education and training, the European Commission's Grundtvig programme has worked with hundreds of learning organisations in the UK and engaged thousands of learners. With Europe striving to be the world's leading knowledge-based economy, it has never been more relevant.
