Principal Leadership, v10 n5 p18-21 Jan 2010
This article presents an interview with Lucy Beckham, the 2010 MetLife/NASSP National High School Principal of the Year, and principal of Wando High School, one of South Carolina's largest and highest-performing schools. Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, has 3,250 in enrollment and has 209 staff members. Beckham shares her story on how she provides leadership for a school with five smaller learning communities, how the curriculum is developed for the specialized areas of study that Wando offers, and the practices she used in providing instructional leadership to all of her teachers. She concluded that in her first days as the principal of Wando, she learned a valuable leadership lesson. She believes that regardless of school size, a principal must be a strong leader with a clear vision for the future of the school.
