Art and the Educated Audience
Young, James O.
Journal of Aesthetic Education, v44 n3 p29-42 Fall 2010
The important role audiences play in the workings of a well-ordered art world is seldom recognized. Aestheticians have little to say about audiences, and artists sometimes express disdain or even contempt for the judgment of audiences. I argue that valuable artworks are unlikely to be produced unless artists are responsive to a broad educated audience. This conclusion leads to a neglected argument for the importance of aesthetic education: an educated audience has an important role to play in encouraging the production of valuable works of art.
