The Typical Outline of an Ethnographic Research Publication
Prendergast, Christopher
Teaching Sociology, v32 n3 p322-327 Jul 2004
The purpose of this paper is to share some classroom materials that help undergraduates extract more sociologically relevant content from the ethnographic research publications they read. Aided by prototyping, discussion, and practice, the materials can help students develop ethnographic research projects that are better framed conceptually. The materials were developed for the author's course, Communities and Urban Society 314, which usually enrolls 20 juniors and seniors. Intended to get undergraduates off campus and into the community, the course requires students to undertake a qualitative research study of their own design and to present their findings--using visual images such as photographs--through Power Point presentations at semester's end. Besides the qualitative research project, students also produce an article review and an "Exploring the City Report."
