The Seeds of Success: Strategic Planning Helps Colleges See the Forest for the Trees
Marzano, William; Sobek, Christine
Community College Journal, v80 n6 p36, 38 Jun-Jul 2010
Every community college engages in partnerships and collaboration. The trend for community colleges has been to increase the number and diversity of partnerships and collaborations. Current economic conditions, which require community colleges to serve more students with decreased state funding and to assume a larger role in workforce development, magnify this trend. Strategic planning demands a step back to view activities from a broader perspective: "What purposes do partnerships serve? What outcomes do partnerships affect? How do partnerships connect internal and external stakeholders?" Recently, the administrative team at Illinois' Waubonsee Community College (WCC) has posed these and other questions of its strategic plan. WCC recently embarked on a new level of strategic planning that strengthens and supports efforts across unit and division lines. Included in this initiative are "major support plans" in finance, technology, human resources, emergency preparedness, diversity, and its 2020 College Master Plan. This article outlines a programmatic support plan developed by WCC for community relations.
