Special Olympics: The Rest of the Storey
MacLean, William E., Jr.
Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities (RPSD), v33 n3 p146-149 Fall 2008
In this article, Keith Storey provides a modest update to his earlier case against the Special Olympics. Several sections have been updated, with some additional consideration of issues related to severe disabilities. The article now includes sections on choice and self-determination and use of taxpayer dollars to fund Special Olympics programs. However, much of the article, including the final section in which Storey presents three choices regarding what, if anything, can be done to change Special Olympics, remains the same. Despite Storey's assertion that "the more things change, the more they are the same," there have been substantial programmatic changes regarding Special Olympics that receive little or no attention in this critique. Similarly, there is a lack of balance in Storey's presentation of the Special Olympics, and readers are entitled to the "rest of the story."
