While much of the skill building revolves around the essential skills of reading and writing, additional skills needed to succeed in the workplace are not emphasized sufficiently in the traditional classroom format. Employers are looking for employees with good interpersonal as well as academic skills. Employees who can work as team members on collaborative projects listen critically, present ideas orally, and manage diversity are ultimately likely to be more successful. The traditional classroom setting is not always the best place to develop these collaborative skills. This article describes the development of a course in Virtual Enterprise, and how the author adapted it to teaching communication in a community college. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
