According to Corman (1995), theory and practice are two sides of the same coin. Each is essential for effective function in organizational contexts and effective teaching in organizational communication courses. However, the classroom experience can benefit from increased efforts to provide students with activities that allow them to apply theory to real-world organizational contexts. Accordingly, one of the most valuable learning experiences organizational communication instructors can provide for students is a practical way to apply classroom theory to realistic and often unanticipated organizational experiences. Thus, the purpose of this paper is: (a) to present an instructional activity that acknowledges the inextricable relationship between theory and practice by emphasizing classroom activities that demonstrate how theory contributes to actual practice; and (b) to enable students to participate more actively and creatively in their own learning.
