Abbreviated Case Studies in Organizational Communication
Wanguri, Deloris McGee
Communication Teacher, v19 n4 p126-129 Oct 2005
The cases contained within organizational communication texts are generally two to three pages, often followed by questions. These case studies are certainly useful. They generally describe events in the present, provide some type of organizational context, include first-hand data, include a record of what people say and think, develop a decision-making situation for the reader, and place the whole case into clear and readable narrative (Peterson, 2000). Depending upon the ultimate purpose of the case study, it may be possible, however, to refine case studies and to offer them in an even more concise and personalized manner. This alternative would allow students to develop vignettes (i.e., case studies) that are short, personalized, and relevant to their personal/professional experiences as a basis for class discussion. This paper presents a four-step activity that allows students generate these case studies.
