"Real-Time" Case Studies in Organizational Communication
Long, Shawn D.
Communication Teacher, v19 n4 p103-106 Oct 2005
This article presents an activity that integrates theory and application by examining the multiple communication events affecting a single organization in "real time" over the course of an academic term. The "real-time" case study (RTCS) avails students of the opportunity to examine organizational communication events as they are occurring in "real-time." The RTCS presents organizational events from a current, not a historical, perspective. Students explore various organizational issues as they are unfolding in real time, considering the implications of events and decisions at the same time organizational leaders are doing so. The RTCS allows students to deal with organizational issues "as is," or in process, creating a "synchronous" as opposed to "asynchronous" feeling to this activity. The RTCS actively involves students in executive and managerial decision-making, in addition to the retrospective sense-making that the traditional case study affords; hence the "real-time" nature of this class experience.
