Sharing information orally is an important skill that public speaking classes teach well. However, the author's students report that they do not often see informative lectures, demonstrations, presentations, or discussions that follow the structures and formats of an informative speech as it is discussed in their textbooks. As a result, the author developed the Interlocutor Informative Speaking assignment to meet several goals: (1) to employ a genre for which there were many examples; (2) to emphasize skills in making credibility claims, especially when establishing the credibility of another individual; (3) to help speakers make complex information more accessible to the uninformed; (4) to demonstrate critical listening and good audience behavior; (5) to provide students with more opportunities to speak in the course of a public speaking class; and (6) to provide a transition from "special occasion" speeches to the fact-sharing mode of informative speaking. This activity aims to provide students with a collaborative experience at informing others, featuring the skills involved in facilitation and making credibility claims for others.
