Management Strategies Help to Promote Student Achievement
Rischer, Andres Dewayne
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v74 n3 p47-49 Nov 2008
Teaching is not an easy task, but it can be mastered. Many students graduate from high school with few life skills. The success of each teacher lies in his or her ability to identify student weaknesses and turn them into strengths, which will eventually increase student confidence and desire to learn. Discipline, classroom management, and engagement strategies are critical. To provide adequate instruction, a classroom must have structure, rules, and boundaries. Students must also be engaged with differentiated strategies. Teachers must create a classroom environment where students are prepared and ready to learn, exemplified by students being in their seats, quiet, ready with pencil and paper, and focused on the teacher and lesson being taught. The author offers five management strategies that help promote student achievement: (1) be confident; (2) know the students; (3) overplan; (4) prepare for the worst; and (5) be consistent. Each strategy is important on its own, but using them collectively truly helps one manage diverse classrooms with ease.
