School board members, administrators, and parents like to think of children as hard working and honest in their academic endeavors. According to recent surveys, that's a misperception. Rutgers Management Education Center reports 75% of the 4,500 high school students surveyed engaged in serious cheating and 88% judged cheating to be "common" among their peers. Some surveys say more than 90% of students have copied homework. No matter the statistics, academic dishonesty is not only epidemic but also seems accepted as a normal part of school culture. In this article, the author stresses the need to examine the reasons and the culture that seems to accept cheating as a normal aspect of schools. He contends that schools must challenge a culture that embraces cheating and eliminates moral questions. This requires integrating issues such as cheating, justice, and self-control into the curriculum.
