When the author attended a leadership conference last year, she started to reflect on her own situation. In this article, the author reflects on her experience and her role as a library media specialist who wants to be a leader in her school. However, to be a leader in a school, one has to offer a set of skills and abilities that others aren't getting anywhere else. While the author acknowledged that she is very strong in library management, she admitted her weakness in effective unit design and meaningful assessment, and set out to hone her skills. In an effort to make an excellent lesson plan, the author decided to read the book "Understanding by Design" by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe (2006) and facilitated a book study for media specialists through some form of virtual communication, such as the Second Life (SL). Reading the book and hosting the book study has had a profound impact on her professional practice. She has gained the confidence and knowledge necessary to speak with teachers about excellent lesson plan design. It also makes her ready to show her deep commitment to instructional excellence.
