Composing Narratives and Opening Spaces--Exploring Intercultural and Gender Themes through Dialogue
Witherell, Carol Smith
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n126 p63-75 Sum 2010
The author has felt for many years that stories and dialogue are at the heart of good teaching and learning environments. In the classes that have shaped her learning and development the most, the teaching and learning roles were shared and interchangeable. These environments were rich with narrative, voice, dialogue, and spaces for all to speak and be heard. They are all teachers and learners, "sojourners together on the road to the future." In this article, the author shares how she came to her interest in narrative, voice, and dialogue as lively, connective tools for teaching, learning, and civic life from a long personal history. This article describes the power of narrative and voice in explorations of gender and culture within a graduate seminar enrolled by educators and counselors.
