Sexuality Education Issues and Methodologies Tailored toward African American Inner City Boys

American Journal of Sexuality Education, v5 n2 p116-127 2010
Many sexuality education interventions focusing on determinants such as attitudes, knowledge, and skills have shown meager impact on sexual behavior. In addition, these determinants have been developed and evaluated for mixed gender or female-only priority populations. More specifically, sexuality education interventions have not been designed comprehensively to address African American sexual norms and beliefs. This gap in intervention methodology has led to a gap in the understanding of effective ways to reduce risky sexual behaviors among African Americans, especially inner city males. To address these cultural sexual health issues among young men, the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program (FWEP) offers more than 20 full support services to predominately inner-city African American youth that deter chemical dependency, teen pregnancy, and school delinquency from a heterosexual African American male perspective. The following paper provides an overview of the unique issues related to African American male sexuality education as well as the FWEP intervention methodologies tailored to address these issues.
