Media Literacy Education: Lessons from the Center for Media Literacy
Thoman, Elizabeth; Jolls, Tessa
Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education, v104 n1 p180-205 Apr 2005
Today information about the world around people comes to them not only through words on a piece of paper, but more and more through the powerful images and sounds of their multimedia culture. This explosion in information has presented a major challenge to the world of formal education. The transformation of their culture from an industrial age to an information age is why a new kind of literacy, coupled with a new way of learning, is critical in the 21st century. This new kind of literacy is outlined in the CML MediaLit Kit[TM]/A Framework for Learning and Teaching in a Media Age. Resting on a foundation of the nonprofit Center for Media Literacy's (CML) 25 years of experience in the field plus the thinking of leading practitioners around the world, the CML MediaLit Kit [TM] was created to help unify the field of media literacy education and establish a common ground upon which to build curriculum programs, teaching materials, and training services. The bulk of this article will explore the six elements of the CML MediaLit Kit[TM] as an educational framework in depth. (Contains 6 notes.)
