Governance under Siege: An Interview with the Chair of the Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees
Trusteeship, v16 n3 p13-17 May-Jun 2008
On February 14, a former graduate student at Northern Illinois University (NIU) entered a campus building and shot 21 people, wounding five fatally, before he shot and killed himself. This article presents an interview with Cherilyn G. Murer, the Chair of the Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees, on the actions taken by the board and the university administration in the aftermath of the shooting tragedy. In the interview, Murer describes her first action, in her capacity as chair of the board, after hearing of the tragedy and shares how she informed the rest of the board about what was happening. She thinks that the NIU board and administration performed well in the aftermath of the tragedy because the board has an outstanding relationship with the president.
