For the Record: Is Your School Accessible and Inviting?
Garrett, Joyce Lynn
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v44 n3 p106-107 Spr 2008
Most Americans believe public education should be available to all citizens; yet, are schools really accessible to everyone? The author argues that they are not. She thinks they are becoming increasingly inaccessible as evidenced by the growing number of students leaving public schools for private institutions, home school, GED and Adult Basic Education programs, online programs, and college-based programs. Accessibility is more than affordable availability. It means breaking down instructional, social, cultural, and economic barriers to ensure that schools are truly open to all because they are safe, relevant, flexible, and responsive. The author believes two factors contribute to making schools less accessible. First, many schools still exhibit the characteristics William Glasser identified in his seminal work "Schools without Failure" (1969) as the cause of mediocrity in schools. Second, many schools across America remain the unintentionally disinviting places William Purkey (2007) described in his theory of Invitational Education. The author encourages teachers and administrators to assess their policies and practices to determine whether they block student access to education in ways they do not intend.
