Measuring School Community Engagement in the Implementation of an Information Literacy Curriculum
Aiani, Candace
School Library Monthly, v26 n7 p49-52 Mar 2010
Years as a school librarian have given the author many wonderful and rewarding collaborative experiences with teachers and students, but it has also made her aware of many barriers to the implementation of information literacy instruction. This is what motivated her to develop a survey measuring school community engagement. This article discusses how specific data that result from the survey can help identify where barriers might exist within program development, school culture, curriculum and instruction, as well as the school librarian as key implementer. The author suggests that when administered to a school district or select group of school librarians, the results of the survey provide a snapshot of community engagement or implementation across schools from the perspective of the school librarians.
