Spaces between the Lines
Lott, Debra
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v109 n7 p19-21 Mar 2010
A variety of subject matter, including foliage, tree roots, branches, and flowering plants, provides opportunities to study spaces and shapes and offers connections to interdisciplinary study and environmental concerns in the artroom. This article presents a lesson that encourages students to investigate their local environment and take photos for their artwork, and invites science teachers to add related content to their lessons. In this lesson, students (1) create a balanced composition that incorporates both positive and negative space; (2) incorporate a variety of pen and ink techniques that develop positive spaces and relate to forms; and (3) invent images and symbolic objects to develop negative spaces.
