Recent innovations in technology have made it possible for many individuals to receive education and training at a distance through the use of the Internet. There is little doubt that ability to utilize the Internet as a delivery modality for postsecondary education offers enormous practical value for many individuals. For individuals who have disabilities, however, this technology also offers the potential to create barriers that violate their rights under U.S. law. This article has been written in order to help postsecondary educators and administrators better understand the current legal environment of online postsecondary learning in the United States. In order to achieve this goal this article provides a basic overview of 5 pieces of U.S. legislation; it then discusses practical implications of these laws as they relate to the administration of accessible online postsecondary education.
