Voices of Women in the Field: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Marchese, Barbara A.
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership, v3 n2 p141-146 Apr 2005
In this article, the author, the Principal of Saint Philip Neri School in Omaha, Nebraska, for 14 years, describes the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of being a principal. She notes that the "good" includes: (1) longevity--having been on the job for 14 years, she has been able to see many of the kids grow and mature; (2) a supportive and unified staff who average 15 years on the job in the school; (3) school improvements that include a new Activity Center, a new Media Center, and a planned overall infrastructure renovation. The "bad" things include: (1) adjusting to changes in leadership; (2) dealing with limited finances; (3) worrying about the home life of some of the students; (4) coping with the added responsibilities that schools today are expected to assume; and (5) living up to the expectations that follow the acquisition of an advanced degree. The "ugly" aspects of the job include: (1) experiencing the death of a colleague; (2) dealing with the family issues of some staff members; (3) worrying about threats to the safety of the children; and (4) maintaining confidentiality.
