Hiring Minority Faculty: Success in Texas
Peoples, Read, III; Smith, Albert B.
Community College Journal, v75 n3 p26-29 Dec 2004-Jan 2005
This study determined whether or not administrators in Texas community colleges, who had been successful versus those who had not been successful in recruiting and hiring minority faculty, had different: (1) views on the barriers; (2) attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions; (3) priorities (commitments); and (4) strategies related to the recruitment and hiring of minority faculty than unsuccessful colleges. The methodology of the study involved a quantitative research design, the use of a 72-item questionnaire, and a four point, Likert response scale to survey presidents, chief academic officers, deans, and division/department chairs in 30 of 75 Texas community colleges. Data analysis techniques used in the study consisted of calculating frequencies and percentage responses to answer the research question. This article presents nine strategies for success in recruiting and hiring of minority faculty based on the results found in the 11 most successful, minority-recruiting two-year colleges in Texas.
