Watts, Chris
Community College Journal, v75 n2 p32-34, 36-37 Oct-Nov 2004
Over the last 10 years the Internet has become an essential part of the way companies do business. These days, it is as important to have a Web site as it is to have a phone book listing. Unfortunately, many Web sites are riddled with perplexing navigation and unclear priorities that leave many users confused and frustrated. This article presents five simple steps to help colleges ensure that their Web site practices good usability: (1) Identify the users; (2) Identify the purpose and goals; (3) Identify the tasks; (4) Identify the environmental challenges; and (5) Identify the technology. These steps should also be followed when creating a Web site to ensure that it will be designed and implemented to be intuitive to the vast majority of its target users.
