Social networking tools have been getting quite a bit of press in libraryland for the past couple of years. It is considered to be one of the key aspects of a library joining what is referred to as the Library 2.0 movement. In this context, social networking is seen as a library service or library outreach mechanism that utilizes popular social networking sites to place the library within that context. The Library 2.0 movement does have some good suggestions for advancing a library's presence in the distributed networked world, and the author supports this transformation of the brick library into the virtual realms where many of their users interact. This column will explore the benefits that can be derived from social networking for the librarian or information science professional. Contrary to the general opinion in management, social networking can help any professional further the goals and objectives of their organization as well as help further their career.
