Career Info Quest: Using AASL Standards to Prepare Teens for the Future
Vent, Laura
Library Media Connection, v28 n4 p28-30 Jan-Feb 2010
Any student will tell people that one question they've been asked repeatedly is "What do you want to be when you grow up?" From a young age, adults expect children to think about their future and to work toward a career goal. If teachers expect their students to be goal driven, career-oriented individuals, they need to provide them with ample opportunities to research and explore their career options before they reach their senior year. This article describes the Career Info Quest collaborative lesson which uses AASL (American Association of School Librarians) standards to help students confidently answer that age old question and to prepare teens for the future. Career Info Quest requires students to research a career and then synthesize the information into a professional brochure. This five-day lesson requires five 50-minute class periods. Students must locate information such as education required, salary range, job forecast, working conditions, and opportunities for advancement. (Contains 2 figures.)
