The Educational Situation in the Far Eastern Region as Perceived by College Students
Tiurina, Iu. A.
Russian Education and Society, v52 n1 p20-29 Jan 2010
The purpose of the present article is to examine a number of the characteristics of the present situation in the sphere of education in the Far Eastern region of Russia as it is reflected in the perceptions of college students, those who represent the main subject of the process of college and university education and are participants in the changes that are taking place in that process. The students' opinions were determined in the course of a sociological survey in the winter of 2006 and 2007 in institutions of higher learning in Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka, involving a sample that was representative for these higher educational institutions. A total of 778 persons took part in the survey. The survey showed that in comparison with college students in other regions of the country, students in the Far East are less well informed about the state's policy in the field of the integration of Russian education in the unified educational space of Europe and Russia's participation in the implementation of the provisions of the Bologna Declaration, including the opportunities opened up to college students and young specialists when the goals have been achieved.
