Education, v129 n4 p734-741 Sum 2009
This study highlights the problems facing the inspectors of education as quality assurance agents and discusses ways of solving them in order to improve the quality of education in Nigerian schools. The study adopted a qualitative method to collect data from both federal and state inspectors of education in Edo State. Data was collected from the 25 state inspectors comprising 18 Chief Inspectors of Education from the 18 Local Government Areas and the 7 Inspectors in the State Ministry of Education. Data was also collected from the 10 Inspectors in the Federal Inspectorate Service in the state. In all, 35 people were involved in the study. Three major questions guided the discussion and these were recorded under three suitable themes. The content analysis of their responses guided the discussion of findings under five strategies which include provision of adequate funds, development and regular review of inspectors' tools, employment of qualified and experienced inspectors, induction of new inspectors and capacity building for practicing inspectors and adequate legal provisions. Recommendations are made for adequate and effective school inspection as a means of achieving quality education.
