Instructional Leadership: A Model for Change in Alternative Middle Schools

This article presents a model that instructional leaders can use to engage in a change process that fosters effective instructional change in school districts and individual school buildings, specifically middle schools and alternative middle schools. The authors describe four dimensions of leadership and explain how each dimension informs effective change in educational organizations. The four dimensions are: (1) understanding self and others; (2) understanding the complexities of organizational life; (3) building bridges through relationships, and (4) engaging in leadership best practices. The model is unique in that it builds on current literature, offering a change process that involves everyone in the organization and ensuring that they understand the goals of the organization and willingly contribute to goal attainment through a systematic process.
