An Inquiry Process for Individual and Institutional Ethics
Farrell, Patricia L.
New Directions for Community Colleges, n148 p71-77 Win 2009
The foundation for a successful college is framed by both institutional values exhibited in its mission, culture, structure, and organization and the way the college implements these values. Thus the college's institutional values must be real and respected. As Schein (1996) would say, these institutional values must be some of the things that leaders embed and transmit within the culture. In their chapter, Anderson, Lujan, and Hegeman discuss the importance of clarifying the institution's mission, purpose, and values to aid in creating an institutional ethical identity. This identity is reflected in the shared beliefs, values, and assumptions and is shown "in what is done, how it is done, and who is involved in doing it." Ultimately, it is reflected in the attitudes and behaviors of the personnel. The purpose of this final chapter is to outline a process explaining how college personnel can go about working collectively to learn as an organization and develop an institutional ethical identity as a whole and as subunits or departments. The author concludes by suggesting that if college leaders are serious about developing an institutional ethical identity, they should consider hiring a facilitator for the initial dialogues. A facilitator can help identify behaviors inconsistent with the ground rules or the discussion and help individuals learn effective behavior when working with groups. (Contains 2 figures.)
